About Our Practice
Introduction
The Orthopaedic Hand & Upper Extremity Center is a sub-specialty practice
providing comprehensive treatment of injuries and disorders involving the
hand, wrist, forearm, elbow and shoulder.
Powerful, supple and versatile, the human hand is a wonder of natural
engineering. But the hand cannot function without its vital linkage to the
elbow and shoulder. It is therefore important to treat the entire upper
extremity, from the shoulder to the fingertips, as a functional unit. This
is the fundamental concept behind the Orthopaedic Hand & Upper Extremity
Center.
The specialty of hand surgery had its origins during World War II.
Dramatically improved results were obtained when severe hand and upper
extremity injuries were treated by a select group of physicians specially
trained in hand surgery. The specialties of orthopaedic surgery, plastic
surgery, general surgery, vascular surgery and neurosurgery all contributed
to the base of knowledge and experience necessary to effectively treat the
injured hand. After the war, “fellowships” in hand surgery were organized to
impart this new expertise to young surgeons. In today’s fellowship programs,
hand surgeons receive this same comprehensive, multi-specialty training and
are able to successfully treat a wide range of injuries and disorders. Hand
surgeons are thus uniquely qualified to treat this intricate and
indispensable part of the body.
The Orthopaedic Hand & Upper Extremity Center, under the direction of Joseph
T. Barmakian, M.D., offers treatment to patients of all ages, from infants
with congenital hand disorders to senior citizens with arthritis. While many
conditions can be effectively treated non-operatively, conventional surgery,
microsurgery and arthroscopy are used to treat a wide variety of upper
extremity injuries and disorders. Fractures, tendon and nerve injuries,
sports injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, tumors, rotator cuff injuries, dislocations and tendonitis
are some of the conditions treated at the Center. If needed, X-ray
facilities are available on-site at both office locations.
At the Center, each patient first receives a thorough examination. Dr.
Barmakian then provides a complete explanation of the diagnosis and a review
of the various treatment options, with time for the patient’s questions to
be fully answered. Finally, a recommendation is given for the treatment option
that best fits the patient’s particular functional needs; a musician, for
example, has different needs than a construction worker. It is through this
time-tested system of examination, explanation and individualized
recommendation that the best results for each patient are obtained.
